Most of us are familiar with vision and mission statements.  Many companies have one or both to guide them in achieving their goals.  You may or may not be familiar with personal mission and vision statements.  Yes, some people create statements to reflect the guiding principles in their lives or to better define their life purpose.

While a personal mission or vision statement may be too formal or structured for many, I believe it’s beneficial and fun to identify some anchor words for ourselves and our lives.  I have about a dozen anchor words that just naturally suit me and reflect who I am and what I’m about.  Anchor words, like mission and vision statements, are unique to each individual.  They serve as a guidepost or a measuring tool for moving forward and living or working ‘on purpose’ — that is, aligned with our highest and best intent.

Through the years, my clients have frequently identified their own personal anchor words during the coaching process.  Some client anchor words that come to mind are ‘innovative’, ‘connecting’, ’lifelong learner’, and ‘healing through movement’.

My client with ‘connecting’ as an anchor word is all about connecting people and ideas.  He loves to connect with a wide range of people, generate ideas and solutions, and connect various people with each other.  At the core of his personality is a natural desire and ability to connect.  He understands this about himself and aims to maximize his gift for connecting in positive ways for mutually beneficial purposes.

My client whose anchor words included ‘healing through movement’ had a dance background.  Throughout her life she realized her love of and talent for dance was, in fact, a healing experience.  She enjoys helping women heal from all sorts of life issues through free form movement and dance.  Thus, ‘healing through movement’ became anchor words for her.

Not everyone needs or wants a personal mission or vision statement.  But think about it — what anchor words might best describe who you want to be, the career you want to have, or the life you want to live?

Much success,

Julie
